Northwestern Thailand consists of many different people groups from many Asian countries including China, Myanmar (Burma), Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. There are many diverse ethnic groups with thousands of years of culture and history that make Chiang Mai city, and its surrounding villages some of the most exciting places in Asia to visit. Thailand is one of the few truly open countries to freedom, democracy, economic prosperity, and religious freedom in Asia today. These conditions make Thailand an appealing place for foreign businesses, religious foundations, and those who have been politically or religiously persecuted to raise families, worship freely, and work without fear or persecution.
There is a special ethnic minority group living and working in Chiang Mai that are called the Hui people. The Hui are from Yunnan province in Southern China, and have spread out across Myanmar, and northern Thailand. There are over 8,000 of these people living in and around Chiang Mai, Thailand, with an estimated 13 million world wide. The Hui speak mostly Mandarin Chinese language, and some Thai while living in Thailand. They also maintain many of their unique Chinese/Islamic traditions, dress, and culture. The religious background of the Hui people is Islam, and in Chiang Mai there are several mosques that belong to the Hui community. Christian scholars estimate that the Hui are the largest people group in the world without a single known Christian fellowship group.
Ministry Opportunities:
• help establish new home churches
• work in Hui communities around Chiang Mai
• build relationships with Hui business leaders,
families and teenagers using sports, housemeetings and mutual dining experiences
PRICE INCLUDEs: roundtrip airfare from a major, departure city, lodging, ground transportation, trip medical insurance. You may
also purchase trip cancellation insurance.
TEAM MEMBERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR: Transportation to departure city, Food (~ $20/day), airport taxes and personal items.
PASSPORT: If you do not have a valid passport, you need to apply for one immediately. Due to process time at the State
Department, TNM recommends you expedite your passport application. Many countries require that your passport be valid at least 6
months beyond the return date of your trip.
