What advice would you give someone looking for a church in Norman?

I am always blessed to visit with those that are looking for a church home, because I believe it is one of the most important decisions an individual or family makes.  First, I invite anyone looking for a church home to visit First Baptist.  We have been in downtown Norman for 125 years serving and being the presence of Christ for the young, the old, and everyone in between.  We care for each other, we serve our community , and we reach out to the nations as we share and exalt Jesus.   We are a Baptist church, but we are unique in our expression as Baptists and many of our members come from a variety of denominational and church backgrounds.  Don’t let a denominational label or stereotype keep you from visiting.  Second, Norman is blessed with many wonderful churches that reflect the diversity of our community and the diversity of the Kingdom of God.  We celebrate that the Body of Christ is larger than First Baptist and our greatest joy is when folks find the right church for them.  If we can help folks find that church home, we consider it pure joy.

If I attend First Baptist Church, Norman this Sunday morning, what should I expect?

As you arrive at First Baptist on Sunday morning there are a few things that you will notice right away.  First, our campus is “under construction.”  The most recent addition is our children’s playground.  Its bright colors and inviting presence speak to our commitment to serve children and their families.  You will also notice the new stairs being built into our sanctuary and the new elevator tower going up on the east side of our campus that will serve our offices and give access to our youth area and adult classrooms, which are being updated.  We believe that these “external” changes are reflective of the inward work of God’s Spirit among our congregation.  Second, we intend to greet you with a spirit of hospitality.  Greeters are at each of our entrances and in our library can answer any questions you have and help you find your place in Bible study and worship.  You may even be greeted by one of our ministry staff as they welcome folks to church.  Worship begins at 10:30 a.m..  We have simultaneous worship services which reflect the diversity of our congregation.  Our traditional service meets in the Sanctuary, at 211 W. Comanche, and our LifeSong service meets at Common Ground, 324 W. Main Street.  Each worship venue is unique to its worship expression.  On most Sundays I preach in both services, but I also invite our ministry staff to preach regularly as well.  Finally, our prayer is that you will experience the presence of God through His people, His Word, and His worship.  When you leave First Baptist on Sunday morning we trust that you will be encouraged and strengthened for the life He has called you to live.

What will everyone else be wearing?

First Baptist is a diverse congregation often reflected through the attire that we wear to church.  This means that you will see people dressed in their “Sunday best” dresses and suits and ties.  It also means that you will also see folks dressed in their business or afternoon casual attire.  Our desire is to dress in ways that honor God and respect each other.  And that looks differently for each of us!

Is there a place for me at First Baptist Church, Norman?

Yes!  The Body of Christ celebrates the diversity of its members and the contribution of each member as part of the Body.  As a church, we desire to serve and encourage each of our members to become the person that God has created us to be.  Likewise, each member has a responsibility to participate and serve the church with their gifts, talents, expertise, and experiences.  One of the exciting things about new members is watching how God integrates them into the fellowship and ministry of the church.  There is a place for you!

How can I learn more about First Baptist?

This website is a wonderful place to learn more about First Baptist.  Each Sunday our worship guide provides a tear-off that you can place in the offering plate and request information.  An eight page brochure is available that illustrates how we Love People, Teach the Word, and Live the Journey together.  Our New at First lunches also provide an opportunity to meet our ministry staff and to learn more about First Baptist.  If you have specific questions, I invite you to e-mail me or one of our ministers.
