Community Ministry

With the Lord’s mandate to love people, the purpose and heart of FBC Norman’s Community Ministry is to walk alongside our neighbors in need.

3-in-one

ASSISTANCE FOR INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES IN CENTRAL NORMAN

Sunday Supper

Every first and third Sunday from 4-5 p.m. we serve a free hot dinner to people of the community in Hallock Hall. Six to eight volunteers from our Life Groups serve this meal and others are always welcome to help and visit with our guests. Contact the Minister of Community Ministries if you would like to help.

Sunday Lunch at Food and Shelter

Volunteers from FBC Norman and other local churches serve lunch each Sunday at Food and Shelter from noon - 1 p.m. Groups of 3-4 people can contact the Minister of Community Ministries to sign up to serve.

Food Pantry and Clothes Closet

The Clothes Closet is open on the first Sunday of every month from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. in FBC's basement. Must bring a valid I.D. to participate. Emergency assistance is available by appointment.

The Food Pantry is open on the third Sunday of every month from 4:50 - 5:30 p.m., following a 4:30 p.m. devotion time in Hallock Hall. Must bring a valid I.D. to participate. We provide three options: individual bag, family bag, and emergency (non-cook option) bag. Emergency food assistance is available at the church office.

Bikes and Bible Ministry

This ministry has given out more than 1,000 bikes to people without transportation since it began. Volunteers work throughout the week to revive bikes so that those in need can receive one. If you are in need of a bike, call 321-1753 to put your name on the waiting list.

Sunday Friendship Shuttle

Each Sunday morning, our volunteers pick up people who need transportation to church and back. If you are in need of a ride to Sunday School and worship, please call 321-1753 by Friday noon to be added to the route.

To Norman with Love

To Norman with Love is our annual faith based day of service. Groups from our church and other churches around Norman partner with organizations to give them additional support. Organizations we have partnered with include Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children, assisted living centers, Mary Abbott Children’s Home, Food and Shelter Inc, Habitat for Humanity, and many others. Watch http://tonormanwithlove.blogspot.com for more information about the next event.

Other assistance

Annual Thanksgiving Basket Party (November) and Health Fair (early spring)

Through your donations, our church also provides annual financial support for local organizations that help homeless/low income individuals and families.

BREAKING THE CYCLE

Beyond helping individuals and families in an immediate crisis, our church is committed to helping break the cycle of poverty in our community, and one way we have found to do this is through mentoring.

Kid’s Hope USA

Our church partners with Lincoln Elementary by providing mentors for at-risk students. Volunteers work one-on-one with a student, meeting once a week for an hour. The mentors help the students academically, but also provide a caring relationship to help them socially and emotionally.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please email  . Check out the Volunteer Information Packet. Once you have decided to become a mentor, return the completed application to the church office.

Other ministries at Lincoln Elementary include our annual Giving Tree, teacher appreciation meals, school supply assistance, and food donations for Hot Dog Howdy. Contact our Minister of Community Ministries  if you would like to get involved with our ministries to the students, families, and teachers, or if you have ideas of other ways we can be of help.

In addition, through your financial donations, our church is able to provide annual financial support for local organizations that help break the cycle of poverty.
